Courses available at the Hinckley Motorcycle Training Scheme

Compulsory Basic Training

Anybody holding a provisional driving licence for a moped or motorcycle MUST complete a CBT course before riding either of them on the public highway. The CBT course provides simple off and on-road instruction covering the basic training needs of motorcycle and moped learner riders. Typically the courses are held on Sundays (other days by arrangement) and commence at 9am. The course varies in duration based on the class's ability, but will typically end between 3pm and 5pm.

The course begins with general advice on motorcycling before moving onto practical off-road training, becoming familiar with the machine and basic maintenance checks, and simple manoeuvres such as turns, slow riding and emergency stops.

Once the instructor feels you are ready, you will be taken on to the road, under supervision, and given instruction on how to deal with features such as junctions, roundabouts and traffic lights. The instructor will be in contact with you, via radio, throughout the on-road session.

The course ends with the issue of the CBT certificate which allows you to ride on the road unsupervised. If for any reason you do not reach the required standard on the day, further training is offered free of charge (upto 2 further sessions).

You do not have to use your own moped or motorcycle as we have machines available for hire. All of our bikes are covered by our own insurance at no extra cost to you. If you choose to use your own bike then it will need to meet certain basic requirements.
Please Note:

  • You will need to bring certain protective clothing and documents with you.
  • Please read and understand the Highway Code before you arrive for your training.
  • If you use optical aids such as glasses or lenses, bring those with you as there is an eyesight test.
  • You should make arrangements to get your bike home in case you don't achieve your certificate that day.
  • Drinks will be provided free of charge during the day, but please bring a packed lunch.

    Accompanied Test Course

If you are under 21 and/or do not wish to learn on a high powered machine, then this is the course for you. Held on Monday evenings (between 7.30pm and 9.30pm), this 14 hour course, spread over 7 weeks, is designed to teach and practice riding techniques needed to ensure that you can ride safely and confidently. In so doing, we will develop you to the standard needed to pass the Driving Standards Agency Accompanied Test. Whilst the course focuses mainly on practical riding skills, you will also have the opportunity to receive Highway Code and basic maintenance tuition.

The non-commercial nature of our scheme allows a certain amount of flexibility. We can often arrange training on alternative days and, within reason, we will not charge for additional training beyond the 7 weeks, should a small amount of further training be required to get you up to the necessary standard.

Whilst most of the training will be practical on-road activity, with a typical trainee: instructor ratio of 2:1, there are theoretical elements relating to the Highway Code and bike maintenance. Included as part of the course, on request, is a proficiency test. A senior instructor that has not been directly involved in your training will conduct this. This is designed to give you experience of an accompanied test. Your knowledge of basic maintenance and of the Highway Code will also be assessed. If you pass the test you will receive a proficiency certificate and lapel badge and will be entitled to certain BMF membership benefits.

We can arrange refresher training, before you take the DSA test, at no extra charge. Motorcycles are available for hire for this course. The hire charge does NOT include the cost of using the machine to take the Accompanied Test. The extra cost will be included in the test price if applicable. All of our bikes are covered by our own insurance at no extra cost to you. If you choose to use your own bike then it will need to meet certain basic requirements.

You will also need to bring certain protective clothing and documents with you and we would ask that you make yourself familiar with the Highway Code. If you use optical aids such as glasses or lenses, please bring those with you.

When your instructor feels that you are ready, and assuming that you have passed your Motorcycle Theory Test, we can arrange your practical test for you.

Once you have passed your test, your licence will entitle you to ride any motorcycle or moped (up to 33bhp). After the two years the 33 bhp limit will automatically cease to apply.

Free refreshments are available on Monday nights.

    Direct Access Course

Currently, laws are in effect which limit riders, who pass the test on a motorcycle up to 125cc, to a motorcycle with a limited power output for a period of two years before being allowed to ride a more powerful bike.

If aged 21 or over, the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) allows the learner rider to bypass the restriction by learning to ride on a powerful motorcycle (under the supervision of a DAS qualified instructor) and to take the test on the more powerful bike. If successful then the restriction does not apply.

The course includes CBT and initial road riding on one of our 125cc machines. Once the instructor is satisfied that you are at a reasonable standard, you will receive a DAS upgrade session by one of the DAS qualified instructors. The course is individually tailored to try and meet your requirements and is therefore not of a fixed length. You may request a proficiency test as in the Accompanied Test Course.

When your DAS qualified instructor feels that you are ready, and assuming that you have passed your Motorcycle Theory Test, we will arrange your practical test for you.

    Accelerated Access Course

If you have already passed your test on a 125cc motorcycle, are at least 21 years of age, and wish to move to a bigger bike before the 2 year period finishes, you can take a version of DAS called Accelerated Access. Following training you take a DSA test on a larger (DAS compliant) bike, which gains you the full licence with no restrictions.
