DIRECT AND ACCELERATED ACCESS

Direct Access

From January 1st 1997 new laws came into effect which limit riders, who pass the test on a motorcycle up to 125cc, to a motorcycle with a limited power output for a period of two years before being allowed to ride a more powerful bike.

If aged 21 or over, the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) allows the learner rider to bypass the restriction by learning to ride on a powerful motorcycle (under the supervision of a DAS qualified instructor) and to take the test on the more powerful bike. If successful then the restriction does not apply.

Motorcycles are available for hire for this course. The hire charge includes using the machine to take the Accompanied Test. All of our bikes are covered by our own insurance at no extra cost to you. If you choose to use your own bike then it will need to meet certain basic requirements.

The course includes CBT and initial road riding on one of our 125cc machines. Once the instructor is satisfied that you are at a reasonable standard, you will receive a DAS upgrade session by one of the DAS qualified instructors. The course is individually tailored to try and meet your requirements and is therefore not of a fixed length. You may request a proficiency test as in the Accompanied Test Course.

When your DAS qualified instructor feels that you are ready, and assuming that you have passed your Motorcycle Theory Test, we will arrange your practical test for you.

Note: The cost of the course includes the use of a bike for the test (assuming you have opted for the 'with bike hire' option) but NOT the cost of the test itself.

Accelerated Access

If you have already passed your test on a 125cc motorcycle, are at least 21 years of age, and wish to move to a bigger bike before the 2 year period finishes, you can take a version of DAS called Accelerated Access. Following training you take a DSA test on a larger (DAS compliant) bike, which gains you the full licence with no restrictions.
